Kyoto Plus is a national petition and politician’s pledge which urges the Canadian government to take strong leadership in Copenhagen.  The Canadian Youth Climate Coalition is one of the organizations supporting Kyoto Plus and recruiting signatures.

The text of the petition reads:

Global warming is the greatest threat to life on earth. Entire populations and ecosystems are threatened by devastating impacts such as drought, heat waves, fires, floods, storms and rising sea levels.

Scientists have warned the United Nations that only urgent action can avert uncontrollable, runaway climate change.

Green solutions will create thousands of jobs and build a strong economy.

To preserve our environment and ensure a livable world for our children, I call on Canadian politicians to support these KYOTOplus goals:

* Set a national target to cut greenhouse gas emissions at least 25 per cent from 1990 levels by 2020.

* Implement an effective national plan to reach this target and help developing countries to reduce their emissions and adapt to climate change.

* Adopt a bold, strengthened second phase of the Kyoto Protocol at the pivotal United Nations Climate Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, December 2009.

The Government of Canada must act NOW to make climate change our highest priority.

The Adopt-an-MP Campaign

The politicians pledge is a key part of the KYOTOplus movement. We need to pressure all Canadian politicians to get behind tough federal action on global warming.  We want all politicians to support the PLEDGE which calls on Canada to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 25 per cent from 1990 levels by 2020. International climate scientists say cuts of at least 25 per cent are needed NOW.  The pledge also calls on all politicians to make sure Canada supports a new global agreement to strengthen and extend the Kyoto Protocol at the historic United Nations climate change conference in Copenhagen, Denmark in December 2009.  KYOTOplus participating organizations are mounting campaigns to get every federal politician to sign.

In order to help with this effort, CYCC is mounting an Adopt-An-MP Campaign.  In order to participate pick an MP (or several MPs) from the Red List (the list of MPs who have yet to sign the pledge) here: http://www.greenpeace.org/canada/en/campaigns/kyotoplus/pledge/red-list-mps#m_top

Then do everything you can to encourage them to sign the pledge:

  • Write them letters and emails
  • Phone their Parliamentary and Constituency Offices
  • Set-up an in person meeting with them to talk to them about Kyoto Plus and your concerns about Canada’s lack of leadership on climate action
