This Sunday!

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

This Sunday, on the 10th of October 2010, let us make the unbelievable happen.

Let’s show the world leaders that we, the people of this planet, are taking action and bringing about a change in our communities. We will have children, household communities, schools, and universities, and climate action groups from across the world joining us for this mega-event and offering solutions to climate change.

Indeed, it is time for us now to make our voices heard – by our leaders, politicians, businessmen, corporate houses, banks supporting mining houses and the Tar Sands. It is time for us to take action which calls for change and pressurizes world leaders to act urgently. Hence, we urge you to take action in your communities and continue with your local struggles in your respective communities. Clearly, there can be no agreement for us, without us.

At present, we are just a few days away from 10/10/10, the single largest carbon cutting day in world history. World over, we are teaming with 350.org to ensure that 10/10/10 is the single largest event to showcase climate solutions on a local level the world has ever seen.

We have over 4000 work parties already registered in over 170 countries. We already have some brilliant 10/10/10 events registered- in Maldives; they are putting up solar panels at the President’s house. 2000 people walking together for a better planet in Vietnam. Bike repairs carried out in San Francisco. Clean up drives in Tonga.

Why should you be far behind? Here are a few action ideas for 10/10/10:
(i) Organize an eco-fest in your college/school/ community- it’s a brilliant way to get more people on board and a fun way to depict climate solutions. You could organize awareness stalls, have fun games (for example, arrest of climate criminals through games), have organic food stalls etc.
(ii) Organize a green rock band event – music is a great way to capture people’s attention and get them involved and thinking about the issue at the same time.
(iii) Organize a bike rally with 350 cyclists.
(iv) Take a pledge that you along with some more people would reduce your emissions by 10%, reduce your water, electricity consumption by 10%
(v) Hold a photography contest which would depict shades of your city in context of environment and development- for example, photographers could take pictures of different aspects of the city ranging from the bad – Tar Sands, beaches with litter to organic farming being practiced in households
(vi) Organize a plastic free day/ no straw day/no tissue paper day- nothing better than reducing our consumption
(vii) Meat free day – nothing like going vegan. It brings down our carbon emissions to a large extent. Or maybe, even organize a picnic with your friends where you go vegan for the day.
(viii) Awareness based campaigns – Organize a teach-in where you could educate people on the issue of 350 ppm, the urgency of climate action and the need to get actively involved
(ix) Plant 350 trees-
(x) Street Theatre – it is an excellent way of reaching out to people and get them thinking about the issue at the same time
(xi) Get some experts on climate change issues, sustainable development issues to speak and discuss the issues of 350 and 10/10/10
(xii) Get the authorities in your school/college and your neighbor hoods to install solar panels, rainwater recycling structures etc
(xiii) Go on a 24 hour climate fast
(xiv) Write to the daily newspaper, blog etc about the issue to sensitive more people to this issue

Well, the sky is the limit for ideas and you could get a lot more creative with ideas.
But let’s show to the world leaders that we are getting to work. And if we can do it, so can they.
Let us create history this 10th October 2010.

Letter to Premier McGuinty

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

Dear Premier McGuinty,

On behalf of the Canadian Youth Climate Coalition (CYCC) and its volunteer members from coast-to-coast, I urge you to use the powers vested to you in government to ensure that new wind turbine blade production work is brought to the Hamilton Siemens gas turbine plant that is set to shut its doors next year.

The CYCC was encouraged to hear of your government’s historic push to promote clean energy transition and new production capacity under the Ontario Green Energy Act. This important program has yielded a series of vital new investments and is helping to change a culture of waste, unaccountability and unsustainable growth that predominates most of the developed world. We have no doubt this initiative will generate spillover benefits for our environment and economy that will stretch far and wide.

Over the past years, your government has presided over the loss of more than 200,000 manufacturing jobs in Ontario. These job losses have devastated communities, left workers and families in despair and left an abundance of unused manufacturing skills, education and capacity within our borders. Where possible, we need to harness that capacity as part of a truly sustainable program for economic re-development. We consider this a core tenet of just and sustainable transition.

The announcement made by Siemens on August 10 to invest in new Ontario-made wind turbine blades was certainly positive news. However, it is discouraging to hear that Siemens has not committed this work to their soon-to-close Hamilton turbine facility. The retrofitting, re-tooling and refurbishment of that facility would inject new life into a highly-productive plant. It would save hundreds of good jobs in a community hard-hit by recession. It would also serve as a model for large-scale industrial transition in this province and in communities elsewhere in Canada.

There is no good reason why this company should build a new facility on a green field site to produce these blades, especially when a viable plant is set to close. The CYCC does not accept that your government is standing idly by while over 500 workers are expected to be terminated.

Our Coalition is throwing its full support behind the members of CAW Local 504 in their campaign to ensure this new green investment comes into the Hamilton Siemens facility. We will be taking immediate steps to engage our activist base, including young workers, students and others in this campaign as well.

I would be happy to discuss this matter with you further and at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely,

Amber Church
National Director

Canadian Youth! Help us define what we mean by a Good, Green Job!

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

The Green Jobs Campaign is a youth-driven, youth-run initiative to galvanize a movement for Green Jobs in Canada. The Green Jobs Campaign is a nation-wide campaign designed to give youth a place to find those solutions together, spearheaded by our country’s largest environmental youth network, the Canadian Youth Climate Coalition.

As we move forward with our campaign we must define what we mean by both a “Good” and “Green” job, especially for youth in Canada. This means that we must include input from environmental groups, labour and social justice organizations, and most importantly – Canadian Youth!

Please pass this survey along to any folks who’d be interested in submitting their feedback as to how they define a Good, Green Job. It will only take a minute! Click here to take survey

Organize or Participate in a Hands Across the Sand Event

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Hands Across the Sand is a movement made of people of all walks of life and crosses political affiliations. This movement is not about politics; it is about protection of our coastal economies, oceans, marine wildlife, and fishing industry.  Let us share our knowledge, energies and passion for protecting all of the above from the devastating effects of oil drilling.

A Message to the World

Hands Across the Sand is now international. Any person in any country may plan events on this website. This is a peaceful gathering of the people of the world. Planning an event is as simple as this:

  • Go to your beach on June 26 at 11 AM in your time zone.
  • Form lines in the sand and at 12:00, join hands.

The image is powerful, the message is simple.  NO to Offshore Oil Drilling, YES to Clean Energy.

Hands Across the Sand is Happening this Saturday Across Canada

There are events happening across Canada as part of Hands Across the Sand.  Already events have been signed up in: Barrie, Comox, Gabriola Island, Hornby Island, Jasper, Kelowna, Lawrencetown, Lethbridge, Niagara on the Lake, Roberts Creek, Saltspring Island, Summerside, Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria, and Wasaga.  You can learn more about these events here.

Don’t see your community listed?  Not a problem – register an event here (there’s still time to set one up).

Send your photos and blogs about your participation along to cycc.director@gmail.com so we can highlight the amazing work you’re doing.
