Concept:
A co-ordinated youth movement that generates a Canadian youth presence at the G20 in Toronto to expose dependence on dirty energy and carbon-intensive industries while demanding the need for climate justice and Canada’s transition to a green and just economy. This Campaign would consist of two pieces:
1) The Youth Convergence to Toronto G20
2) Community-based affinity groups across Canada mobilizing youth to take political action on climate change in the lead up to the G20

CYCC Objectives towards G20:
• To leverage the G20 as an opportunity to keep political pressure on the Canadian government to take meaningful climate action in order to achieve a fair, ambitious and legally binding climate deal at COP16;
• To strengthen youth mobilizing for a transition from carbon-intensive industries, particularly that of the Tar Sands, to a clean and just economic future;
• To diversify and strengthen the climate youth movement in Canada and build the capacity of youth climate organizers;
• To advance youth awareness and analysis of climate justice issues, locally and internationally.
• To build the organizational strength of CYCC by bringing in new members, building a more sustainable funding base, and increasing the skill set of staff and key leaders.

Campaign Activities:
1. Convergence to Toronto G20 Summit

Promote and facilitate a youth convergence to the Toronto G20 Summit from communities across Canada. As youth move across the country towards Toronto, they will stop in cities along the route and participate in local initiatives organized by Climate Crews. The convergence would grow as it passes through these cities and gathers more youth heading for the Toronto G20.

CYCC would also coordinate the national media/communications strategy for the convergence and ensure linkages between Local Teams and youth on the convergence.

When these youth arrive in Toronto, they can share stories from their convergence and highlight the work of Local Teams at the People's Summit and Climate Camp taking place in the days leading up to and during the Toronto G20.

2. Local Teams: Local teams or “Climate Crews” in each province and territory will work to organize local climate and energy-related initiatives in the build-up and during the G20. Local Teams work will be shared at the People's Summit and Climate Camp in Toronto by youth participating in the Convergence. All initiatives in lead up to G20 are linked to some level of political action to continue public pressure on the Canadian government.

G20 Campus Outreach Organizers (1 full-time**, 5-7 part-time):
Responsibilities:
1. Oversee all campus outreach
2. Coordinate and support efforts of the G20 and Climate Campus-based organizers on campuses and universities in their region
3. Coordinate campus outreach on campuses and universities in their region
4. Set up Climate Crews on campuses and be point person for these action teams
5. Work with Climate Crews to organize Flash mobs, climate justice teach-ins, G20 teach ins, At the Table activities, and other events on campus
6. Collect youth-produced media and media hits from local action teams and consolidate on website
7. Compile regional contacts for database of local student activists

Time line: 10 weeks, March through mid-May 2010
**The full-time organizer will oversee all campus outreach, but spend three quarters of their time doing campus outreach in South-western Ontario. The part-time organizers will focus on campus outreach in their community or region. Ideally, there will be an organizer in each of the following four regions: Quebec, Atlantic, BC/North, and Central/Prairies.

Qualifications:
• Some background in climate science, policy, education, or advocacy
• Some background working with youth
• Project management, campaigning and team management experience
• Strong team player
• Self-motivated with an ability to work independently
• Strong writing and research skills
• Ability to work in flexible work environment
• Strong ability to multi-task
• Enthusiastic and creative with a willingness to learn
• Web design and social media skills will be considered an asset
• Previous experience with the Canadian Youth Climate Coalition will be considered an asset

Timeline - March through to April 2010:

Flash Mobs: Having weekly or monthly actions in high traffic areas to raise awareness about climate-related issues - including profiling opportunities for change - that should be addressed at the G20. Flash mobs will include mass calls to government officials, as this has been very successful in the past.

At the Table Campaign: In partnership with the Canadian Federation of Students and other At the Table partners, support climate component of the campaign and promote campaign activities on campuses.

Coalition canadiennes des jeunes pour le climat

Notre mission

 We are the eyes and ears of Canada's new green economy.  Young people are calling for a historic effort to fundamentally transform the way our society produces and consumes energy-- creating new social and economic systems with clean, just, and sustainable energy supplies.  We are ready to build a green jobs economy that provides stable employment while addressing our moral and legal obligations to reduce our emissions and address the climate crisis.

Everyone is talking about a need for a new economy.  As youth we need to be part of defining it.  It will be young people who work in that economy, and our children who live its legacy. Our answer to this challenge is green jobs. Show our elected officials that you're ready for change, you're ready for a clean and just future, and you want green jobs...NOW!!
